Unresolved traumatic experience can give rise to a wide range of symptoms. These may include any of the following:

  • anxiety
  • depression
  • stress 
  • hyper-vigilance (always being on the look out for danger), inability to relax
  • flashbacks (includes feeling like past events are happening right now, or unsafe for no obvious reason)  
  • nightmares, disturbed sleep
  • numbness or lack of feeling or emotion, inability to feel pleasure
  • panic attacks
  • angry outbursts
  • dissociation/ 'spacing-off'/ de-realisation (things not feeling real)
  • difficulty distinguishing what's important right now
  • self-blame, guilt
  • difficulty with relationships, sexual issues
  • feeling like there's something terribly wrong
  • feeling overwhelmed by apparently small things
  • suicidal thoughts
  • use of drugs, alcohol, self-harm or obsessive work to 'escape' or deaden feeling
